Groups & Ministries of our Parish

Altar Servers
Did you know that the Altar Server Ministry is for the young members of the Church?  To be an active participant in the Mass is very special and at St Joseph’s you may have seen young people acting as Altar Servers.  If you have received your First Eucharist and you would like to participate in this Ministry, please have a talk with Mum and Dad.  Training will be provided and you will be rostered on at least one weekend a month with an experienced server to assist you.  Contact with the coordinator can be made by calling the Parish office on 5441 1034.

Art and Environment Group
Through visual art and effects, such as Altar settings, Floral displays and symbols and the maintenance of the physical interior of our worshipping space, we strive to compliment and enhance the Sacraments, Rites, Liturgical Seasons and Feast Days, which take place in our church environment throughout the year.

The Environment and Art ministry consists of persons who maybe gifted, but not necessarily, with design (Art Work), sewing (both machine and hand sewing), floral arranging, building, carpentry, brass cleaning etc. We also extend a welcome to anyone, who has no specific skills but are willing to do small tasks such as sourcing materials and shopping, particularly during the various ‘busy’ seasons such as Easter, Advent and Christmas.

Meetings are not regularly scheduled and usually take the form of a relaxed, social gathering when specific projects are going to be undertaken or pre-Easter and pre-Christmas.

Baptism Ministry
The Sacrament of Baptism is the first Sacrament of Initiation. It involves ritual washing with water. Water is commonly known as a symbol of life and cleansing – that’s what it means in Baptism too. Water is poured over a person’s head (or the person can be immersed in water). This action is a symbol of washing away Original Sin and rising to new life in Christ and marks the beginning of a person’s participation in the mission of the Church.

The Baptism ministry meets with the families who are preparing to baptise their child into the Catholic faith. The ministry team generally meets monthly on the first Monday of the Month at 7.00pm for approximately an hour with families and discuss what the Baptism journey is and how it is the beginning of a life long journey for their child and the family into the Catholic faith. The team discusses the Rituals and Symbols of Baptism with the families and prepares them on what will be expected and required of them for their child's baptism.

Any parishioner willing to join this ministry please contact the parish office to find out about policy requirements. Please consider this ministry as all you need to have is the willingness to share your faith journey with young families who bring their child to be baptised into the Catholic Faith.

Children's Liturgy
Our children’s liturgy gives our youngest parishioners the opportunity to come together during Mass to listen and reflect on the Word of God and share with each other in a way that makes sense to  them.

Children’s liturgy is available currently during both masses on the first weekend of the month, and we welcome anyone with a calling, to join this fulfilling ministry (all resources are included, just need passionate people to lead).

Christian Meditation in the Parish
The World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) is a global spiritual community united in the practice of meditation in the Christian tradition. It shares the fruits of this practice widely and inclusively, serving the unity of all and building understanding between faiths and cultures.

The roots of WCCM lie in the desert tradition of early Christianity in the 4th century. Fr John Main (1926 -1982), a Benedictine monk, recognized that the way of ‘pure prayer’ or ‘prayer of the heart’ could restore this lost dimension of prayer to the life of the churches.
As a result of John Main’s insight the WCCM was formed in 1981. There are now thousands of weekly meditation groups around the world.

The WCCM is by nature ecumenical and welcomes all.

It is held on Thursdays 9.30am (St John Bosco, Kenilworth) – Sue Wolter  0439 130 158

Communion to the Sick
This role entails rostering people to do this important ministry in our Parish taking Communion to the Sick whether it be a parishioner who is unable to attend Mass or to take Communion to parishioners who now reside in Nursing home facilities.

While we celebrate Mass regularly in this parish, there are many who, due to ill health, mobility or transport challenges, are unable to join the celebration. St Paul calls us to be the Body of Christ - that means we need to be diligent in remembering those who, while remaining faithful, are not with us. Every week, women and men from across the Parish take the Body of our Lord to the sick and housebound but we are always looking for more.

To be part of this ministry you are required to have a Police Check and Blue card to be able to attend any Nursing Home facilities. Parishioners are also required to have a current Flu shot every year to be able to do this ministry.  I encourage anyone who feels that they can join this ministry to contact the Parish office to register their interest.

Eucharistic Adoration
Eucharistic Adoration is about spending time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.  During this time we “watch and wait”, we remain “silent” in Jesus’ presence and open ourselves to His Graces which flow from the Eucharist.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament occurs on the first Friday of each month immediately after the 8am Mass with Exposition and Benediction from 6pm till 6.30pm.  Please click here for more information.

Helping Hands
‘Helping Hands’ is the Care and Concern Ministry or support arm of the church. We provide short-term help to St Joseph’s Parishioners through phone-calls, visits, meals, and transport to people, who may be sick, recovering from an operation; are isolated or lonely. We also provide practical support to other Ministries in the Parish.  We make and send Sympathy, Get Well and Thinking of You cards to help support our St Joseph’s Parishioners in difficult and challenging times and to let them know that they are not forgotten. If you feel that you’d like to be involved in this ministry, please phone Cecilia in the office on 5441 1034 to contact Jan and Kate.

Liturgical Music
Our Music Ministry plays an important role in providing an uplifting and meaningful experience within our Liturgical celebrations. Careful planning takes place to choose appropriate hymns for each celebration and all our musicians and singers, take care to prepare themselves prior to presenting the music each week. We are always looking for new members, who share a love of music and are competent musicians.

Liturgy Committee
A simple definition of liturgy would be ‘the official, public worship of the Church’.   The St Joseph’s Liturgy Group supports and is guided by Fr Odinaka in preparing any liturgy.  Our weekend liturgy is supported by members of 8 Ministries.  Members of the Group meet with Fr Odinaka in the Parish Centre at 4.15 pm on the first Monday of each month and you are cordially invited to come to any meeting.

Parish Pastoral Council
The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) or Parish Leadership Team (PLT) is an assembly of people within the parish faith community (clergy and lay-faithful) dedicated to provide consultation, advice, and decision-making help on the overall life and ministry of our parish community.  Please click here for more detailed information >>

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults - RCIA
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a faith journey exploring our Catholic life. As a Parish we welcome those who are seeking faith and offer a gentle journey towards communion within our Catholic community. This journey meanders over several months exploring many aspects of our faith and core beliefs, culminating in our enquirers accepting Baptism and Confirmation. Being a part of this ministry can be a very rewarding experience for all participating. Anyone who is interested in sharing their faith journey with others, either as a sponsor or session facilitator, is very welcome to become a part of our growing team.

Sacramental Program
This ministry is working with families of children who are at the age to journey through the Sacraments of Confirmation, Eucharist and Reconciliation. This is a 3-year process commencing with Confirmation in Year 4, Eucharist in Year 5 and Reconciliation in Year 6. These Sacraments cannot be done all in one year as the Archdiocese of Brisbane has made the journey a 3-year process to assist the children to grow and encourage them on a life long journey with God.

The Sacramental program is not only for the children but also for their families as they journey together through the process and understanding of the Sacraments. The Sacramental journey encourages dialogue between the children and parents and is guided and assisted by wonderful volunteers in the Parish who enjoy sharing their journey with all the families.

Parishioners able to assist and share their faith with children and families please consider joining this ministry as the children and their families are the church of the future. Please contact the Parish office during office hours to find out what requirements are needed to join the ministry.

Youth Ministry
Our youth ministry offers young men and women within our parish, schools and local communities the opportunity to encounter Christ through sharing prayer, fellowship, formation, and good works; and empower them to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today. We gather every last Friday of the month. Please contact the parish office for more information.
